さらに青山氏は、先日イギリスで開催された国際ガス・ハイドレート学会において、韓国が竹島の南にあるメタンハイドレートについて研究発表をした際、発表者は日本海を「東海」と称したうえで、「2014年に東海のメタンハイドレートを実用化すると発表した」と語った。そして、その研究の資金はIHO（国際水路機関）で「国際的な表記は『日本海』である」と発表したばかりのアメリカ政府が出しているといい、

「竹島問題はメンツの問題じゃない。実は世界の資源の争いと直結している」

と、韓国とアメリカによる日本海のメタンハイドレート開発が既成事実化しつつあることに警鐘を鳴らした。
